Girdling Root Removals & Root Collar Corrections/Excavations

The problem:

  • Stem girdling roots (roots that grow too close to the main trunk or across lateral roots) compress those areas as the roots increase in size. Over time, this deprives the tree of vital nutrients and water.
  • Trees affected by stem girdling roots become progressively weaker over a 5-10 year period despite good pruning and fertilization practices.
  • Trees that are planted too deeply or mulched incorrectly encourage the formation of stem girdling roots.

The solution:
The problems associated with stem girdling roots can be alleviated with stem girdling root removal, and also prevented with root collar corrections.

GIRDLING ROOT REMOVALS
Stem girdling roots are a classic abiotic (non-infectious) long-term primary stress factor that will predispose the tree to secondary, more acute problems such as insects and disease. Stem girdling root removals help the tree restore vascular movement of water and nutrients to the canopy and energy (carbohydrates) to the roots.

ROOT COLLAR CORRECTIONS/EXCAVATIONS
A root collar excavation is an essential component in managing tree health. It involves using compressed air to remove mulch and soil from against the root flare and lower trunk. It is a very effective process that corrects issues with over mulching, trees that are buried too deeply, as well as stem girdling roots.
